Breast augmentation horror stories abound — to the point that a lot of them are clearly urban legends. But at the center of many of these tales of woe are burst implants. A woman gets augmentation, then her implants explode during a car crash, while playing sports or even just coughing and sneezing (yeah, side-eyeing those claims).
But, like, implants totally can burst, right? Yeah, they can. It’s very unlikely, but sure, in rare cases, it might happen, especially with older implants. However, even with old implants, smaller leaks are much more likely than a silicone explosion.
OK, But How Strong Are Breast Implants?
Yes, I already said exploding implants are rare — so rare that you really shouldn’t entertain the possibility. But even if you are 99.999999% likely to never burst your boobies, someone has to be that fraction of a percentage, right?
If implant explosions are keeping you from the look you want, today is the day you put those fears to rest. Yeah, that’s how statistics work. But legit, breast implants are strong, ladies. And Dr. Anthony Youn took to TikTok to make it clear just how resilient fake boobs are.
Hold onto your seats because this one gets a little wild.
So, Dr. Youn is sick of the urban legends and patients losing sleep worrying over something that is so statistically unlikely, it verges on the impossible. So, he decided to make some very special content for his 7.3 million TikTok followers.
A board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Youn took a saline-filled breast implant and a silicone-filled butt implant and conducted an experiment: he wanted to see which would be more durable. While this is meant to look at the strength of saline vs. silicone and butt implants vs. breast implants, it ended up demonstrating just how ridiculous those urban legends are.
What exactly did Dr. Youn do to these implants? Well, he smashed them with a hammer, crushed them under his heel, slammed them in a door and then — YIKES! — bit them with what he called his “sharp-a** teeth.”
Listen, I don’t know what you plan to do with your augmented breasts, and of course, you do you, but I’m pretty sure you won’t be putting them under worse strain than hammers and Dr. Youn’s apparently piranha-like teeth.
So, what was the result of this experiment? Neither implant exploded. In fact, they didn’t even leak. Dr. Youn did state that the breast implant had a better flavor than the butt one, though, so make of that what you will.
Basically, Modern Implants Are Resilient
Underneath the myths lies a grain of truth. Basically, implants haven’t always been as awesome as they are today. Like all other areas of medicine, cosmetic surgery has seen incredible advancements in the last two decades.
While even modern implants won’t last forever, you should expect to have yours for 10-20 years before they need to be replaced. Even then, don’t expect them to burst or even leak; it’s just a good idea to replace them once every 1-2 decades.
