Vintage blue plastic robot toy. When you think about nose jobs, looking younger probably isn’t at the top of your list of benefits that come to mind. But the latest research shows that getting a new nose could take years off your look—at least that’s what a robot says.

So does a nose job really make you look younger? And is that reason enough to get one? Let’s chat.

Shave 3 Years off Your Look? Don’t Mind If I Do

A facial recognition program called Microsoft Azure Face API trained extensively before being put to work on this project. The robot has looked at thousands of pictures of people’s faces, learning which characteristics make people look a particular age.

Then, cosmetic surgery researchers put the robot — and nose jobs — to the test. The program looked at before and after pictures of 100 women who had had rhinoplasty. All of the women were between the ages of 16 and 72, and the photos were taken 12 weeks after their nose jobs, all from the same angle.

Interestingly enough, the robot determined that the “after” photos looked an average of three years younger than the same women’s “before” pictures.

The Older You Are, the Better the Anti-Aging Benefits

The results are even better for you Golden Girl babes out there. According to the facial recognition program, getting a nose job could take up to seven years off your look. How’s that for an overnight anti-aging trick?!

Fun fact: a facelift can make you look up to 12 years younger.

The big question now is, how did the robot come to this conclusion, and is it accurate? Researchers found that, as we age, our noses tend to droop ever so slightly. In fact, it’s usually so slight that we don’t even perceive it. But when the computer analyzes each facial feature and compares them side-by-side, that’s exactly what it picks up on.

Plus, our cheeks start to sag as we age, which usually makes our noses appear more prominent. After a nose job, your nose is lifted and usually a bit smaller. These subtle changes make the robot think your face is actually younger by taking the emphasis off your nose and making your other facial features appear more youthful and balanced.

So, Should You Get a Nose Job to Turn Back the Clock?

Obviously, looking a bit younger after your nose job is an added bonus—that is, if you’re at an age where you care about that sort of thing. But getting a nose job is by no means the best solution if your main goal is to look younger. There are other facial procedures for that, like facelifts, neck lifts, brow lifts, eyelid surgery, fillers, BOTOX® and the list goes on and on.

So the bottom line is: Don’t settle on a nose job if you really want to kick wrinkles to the curb. But if you happen to want to change the size or shape of your nose and reap some anti-aging benefits along the way, more power to you, girl.
