What do I need to do for breast augmentation prep?

Are my nipples off-limits to my husband in the days before surgery?

What do I need to do the day before breast augmentation?

All these questions are common, so you are not alone. This guide will help you better understand what to expect and how to prepare for your breast augmentation and recovery.

The Week before Your Breast Augmentation

As your breast augmentation surgery gets closer, preparing for the big day can help to alleviate some anxiety you may feel. Take this time to prepare and get ready, both for the big day and your recovery that will follow. Some key things to consider include:

Take Time Off from Work

As your surgery approaches, make sure you have secured the time off from work for your recovery. This is typically 2 weeks.

Pick Up All Post-Surgical Prescription Medications

Your surgeon should provide a list of post-surgical medications before your procedure. It is a good idea to pick these up in advance as you will not feel like stopping at the pharmacy after your surgery.

Take Time to Stock Up and Prepare

During the week before your surgery, make sure to stock up for your recovery. Fill your fridge with healthy and easy meal options. Consider picking up bendable straws to make drinking easier during the first few days. You may even consider making up meals ahead of time so you can simply microwave and eat.

Take Care of Household Chores and Create a Recovery Area

During your recovery, housecleaning is going to be the last thing on your mind. Take this time to thoroughly clean your home, wash your bedsheets, complete laundry, pay household bills and prepare a recovery area. Your recovery area should have everything you need within reach. Think about things like your cell phone and charger, television remote, books, bottled water, baby wipes, tissues and anything else you might want to get through recovery.

Make Arrangements with Friends and Family

After your surgery, you will not be able to drive yourself home. You will need to have a family member or friend take you home and, ideally, stay with you for the first 24 hours in case you need assistance. If you have children or pets, having someone there to help you take care of them is essential.

Create A Post-Surgical Wardrobe

When you get home and during the first few days of recovery, you are going to want to rest and relax in comfortable clothes. Make sure to set out PJs, robes and other comfy clothes.

Stop Smoking

Stop smoking at least two weeks before your procedure and refrain from smoking until your recovery is complete. Smoking can adversely affect your recovery.

Complete All Pre-op Tests and Blood Work

Before your surgery, you will likely have a list of pre-surgical tests, such as blood work, EKGs, etc. Make sure you complete these tests as advised by your surgeon.

Avoid Alcohol and Taking Any Anti-Inflammatory Medications

Refrain from drinking alcohol or taking anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin or Ibuprofen, and supplements, such as Omega-3 and fish oil, for at least two weeks before your procedure. These can affect your blood clotting abilities and can contribute to complications. If you take prescription blood thinners, talk to your surgeon and follow his advice before surgery.

The Night before Your Breast Augmentation

Take care of a few last-minute tasks the night before to make the day of your surgery easier.

The night before your boob job is the time to make sure that you have everything in place for your recovery. Confirm with family and friends that will be assisting you. You will likely have a list of pre-operative instructions from your surgeon and you should follow all of these. That may include things like showering with a special antibacterial soap and not eating or drinking after midnight. Make sure to have everything ready for the morning and get a good night’s sleep.

The Day of Your Surgery

On the morning of your surgery, be sure not to eat or drink. You may have to take another antibacterial shower. Dress in comfy clothes, do not put on makeup or any lotions and take off all jewelry. Follow any additional pre-op instructions and wait for your friend or family member to drive you in for your procedure.

Following these tips can help make your big day go smoother and have you better prepared for your recovery. This planning will help you focus on your recovery.
