Watch Yourself! Anyone Can Be a Plastic Surgeon on Social Media

fake plastic surgeonSo you want to get plastic surgery or even a nonsurgical cosmetic treatment—what do you do? If your answer is something along the lines of, “Head to Instagram!” stop right there and take this advice on who can perform plastic surgery and how to find a reputable provider.

If Insta Is Their Only Credential, Walk Away

Believe it or not, fake doctors posing as plastic surgeons on social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat is a growing problem. Most recently, a Florida man was arrested for creating an Instagram profile that claimed he was a doctor who could perform BOTOX® and other cosmetic procedures. As it turns out, he was not a doctor, nor was he licensed or trained to perform these procedures.

Most of the time, these fake Insta-docs will post seemingly unbeatable deals on BOTOX, fillers and sometimes even plastic surgery procedures on their social media pages, hoping to attract customers. So if you come across ridiculously low prices plastered all over social media, keep scrolling. Or better yet, turn them in.

So Who Can Perform Plastic Surgery?

Avoid being a BOTOX horror story and do a little investigative work first.

Unless you want to end up with a seriously botched job, check up on your provider before going through with plastic surgery or a cosmetic treatment. Board-certified plastic surgeons are backed by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and have the medical training and expertise needed to provide safe and effective results.

Although a provider does not necessarily have to be a plastic surgeon to perform BOTOX injections, he or she does have to meet various qualifications. So you should still go through a board-certified plastic surgeon’s office to make sure you’re getting the real deal.
