In her memoir, “Open Book,” she opens up about tummy tuck surgery gone wrong. Simpson, who has dealt with serious weight fluctuations as well as multiple pregnancies, was unhappy with the look of her stomach — to the point that she wouldn’t allow herself to be naked even in the shower.

Her confidence was so low that she rushed into back-to-back tummy tucks against doctor’s orders. Her liver enzymes were still elevated from her substance abuse battle, so her doctor would only offer a partial tummy tuck. When that didn’t make her happy, she rushed into a full tummy tuck two months later.

Unsurprisingly, she ended up with an infection and was hospitalized for over a week.

So, How Do You Avoid Pulling a Simpson?

Take the right steps to prepare and you should see success with your tummy tuck.

There is never a guarantee you will avoid complications, but if you know how to get ready for a tummy tuck and take it seriously, you should come out better than Jessica did. Here are some simple tips to prime you for greater success.

Listen to Your Doctor

If your plastic surgeon tells you that getting surgery isn’t a good idea because of your health or habits, listen to them! Yes, looking good can be a major confidence boost, but you aren’t going to be feeling too great about yourself when you are hospitalized with a massive infection or blood loss.

And if your doctor tells you surgery is A-OK despite things like alcoholism and pill addiction (side-eyeing Simpson’s team), research picking a tummy tuck surgeon, because girl, you need a new one.

Get in the Right Headspace

If you are desperate for a tummy tuck because you hate your body to the point that you cannot even shower without clothes on, postpone the surgery, talk to a therapist and maybe consider a good swimsuit in the interim. Plastic surgery can be lifechanging, but when the problem is inside as well as outside, you have to mentally heal. Otherwise, the physical transformation will feel empty.

Treat Your Body Right

If plastic surgery is meant to be an act of self-care, then you need to be doing that all around, not just by going under the knife. This means nourishing your body with the right foods. It means staying hydrated and exercising daily. It also means kicking your bad habits, unlike Miss Simpson at the time. Stop smoking, stop drinking and for sure, stop doing drugs.

Set Up Your Recovery Space

Finally, a tummy tuck is a major surgery that requires a lot of help and a significant recovery period. Before surgery, you need to set up your recovery space. Thinking about your comfort, ease of access to all the things you need as well as entertainment. And be sure to arrange for others to help you. While it can be hard to let others see you when you are vulnerable, you will need help.

While we are glad that Jessica opened up about her mistakes, we want you to learn from her, not follow in her footsteps. By making the right choices, you can have a happy and healthy plastic surgery experience.
