When preparing for surgery, I find many patients put all their attention on the lead-up to the procedure. After all, a tummy tuck may be a long-awaited end to a tough weight loss journey, or a way to reclaim your figure after pregnancy. But no matter why you choose this surgery, it’s equally as important to prepare for your recovery too. Here are four ways to help your body bounce back from your tummy tuck in the fastest and most comfortable way possible.
Wear Your Compression Garment
Compression garments help reduce swelling and prevent fluid accumulation. They also provide additional support as you begin to move around following your procedure. Many patients find binding garments even make them more comfortable and help expedite the recovery process.
Take Time Off
It’s important to take adequate time off from work and other activities to allow your body to fully heal. In general, expect to need about two weeks before you can comfortably return to work. By resting and allowing your body to recover fully in the short term, you’ll decrease the total time required to get back to your normal routine.
Stay Hydrated
Following your tummy tuck, make sure you drink plenty of clear, non-caffeinated fluids and avoid alcoholic beverages for several days. This will prevent dehydration that could set back your recovery time.
Don’t Rush Recovery
The most important tip for a faster tummy tuck recovery may seem like a counterintuitive one: don’t rush. Your body needs time to heal, and in order to do that successfully, you have to give it a break. So take some time for yourself, relax, and plan to catch up everything later on, after you’re healed. Your body will thank you.
